After selling out its New Year’s Eve shows in record time, ComedySportzhas a full schedule of regular weekend shows, and it’s starting a new round of ComedySportz workshops Jan. 8.

The workshops teach the fundamental concepts of comedy improv and help participants apply them to the competitive team format that ComedySportz has been developing since 1984. Workshop participants have gone on to form their own improv groups, such as Homegrown Electric Circus. The workshops also have been a laboratory and springboard for many standup comics and sketch comedy artists, including Milwaukee’s all-female troupe broadminded.

After a couple of workshops, some graduates practice what they’ve learned in the ComedySportz Recreational League, which completed its 16thseason in November.

A team called the Spasmodic Dinosaurs won the recent Rec League championship. As their reward, teammates Victoria Shaw, Eric Wertzler, Pam Zorko and Ben Scharf will perform against a professional ComedySportz team at a regular show, at 10 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11, at 420 S. 1st St.
