Some folks fear the unknown. Others embrace it.
Put broadminded comedy in the embracing group. In fact, the Milwaukee troupe of Stacy Babl, Anne Graff LaDisa, Melissa Kingston and Megan McGee have choreographed an entire sketch show around the theme of surprise.
And though “sketch” suggests premeditation, broadminded has worked a couple of surprises into each show for the entertainment value of seeing how one of them responds to the unknown in front of an audience. For instance, on opening night, Stacy had Anne balance a bucket on her head and then tossed water balloons for Anne to catch.
The final shows of broadminded’s “Surprise!” are at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13, at the Tenth Street Theater, 628 N. 10th St. They rate the material suitable for ages 15 and older. Tickets are $10 at www.broadmindedcomedy.com.
Special guest performers include:
- And on Saturday, April 13 - Two and a Half Gay Men, featuring Jacob Bach, Robby McGhee and Nevin Langhus (You also can catch the three of them for $5 in The Improvised Musical, which has its next show at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at ComedySportz, 420 S. 1st St.)
So even with all the comedy at the Underground Collaborative this week (see below), Milwaukee has plenty of other options to grab a laugh.
Among them is the Open Mic Under the Staircase, one of the best open mics for standup comedy in the Milwaukee area. It’s a production of the Caste of Killers Comedy Collective and starts at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, at the Karma Bar & Grill, 600 E. Ogden Ave.Admission is free and there’s no drink minimum, but hey, you’ll be thirsty anyway.
Also, don’t overlook the improv troupe Homegrown Electric Circus, which has a show at 7 p.m. Saturday at ComedySportz, 420 S. 1st St. Homegrown features the clever humor and boyish charm of Scott Heaton, Josh Barto, Mike Walker and Evan Koepnick.
From Facebook: “As you’ve probably noticed when checking your Facebook Events page there’s a lot going on in Milwaukee this weekend. It’s enough to drive a person crazy. Maintain your sanity by opting out of everything and going to see Homegrown Electric Circus instead. They’re performing 7:00 on Saturday night at Comedy Sportz for the low, low price of $5. Why you’d be crazy not to go!”
Who they calling crazy?
