On the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, some of Milwaukee's more thoughtful comedians get together to discuss some of the finer points of their craft. They even use words like "colloquium."
"The colloquium is a formal, disciplined approach to development as a comedian. It is geared toward those of us who are serious about getting funny.
Comedy seems to be one of the only disciplines that has almost no course of formal study. People who do master it do so through lots of trial and error.
We will sort of zero in, as a scene, on becoming masters of the art and science of comedy."
But they also use words like "turds," as in "Bring anything that you think needs work and lets polish those turds together!"
So it's part colloquium, part turd-polishing.
They call it The Writers Block, and they gather at 7 p.m. at the Underground Collaborative, 161 W. Wisconsin Ave., lower level.
They are led by one of Milwaukee's favorite comedians, Ryan Lowe.
