The for-sale sign in front of 420 S. 1st St., Milwaukee, emphasizes that ComedySportz is not moving. In fact, it turns out ComedySportz is becoming more entrenched. Turf Theater, a new division of the deep-rooted improv institution has put out a call to teachers in the region to get involved in advancing theater arts through educational programs in writing, directing, acting and comedy. ComedySportz veterans Greg Bach and Michele Kieweg have founded Turf Theater as a place where students and instructors can interact and learn. “Right now, there are no dedicated schools focusing on comedy in Wisconsin,” Bach says in a news release. “If you want to study, you have to travel to Chicago, which isn’t always an option for individuals both financially and time wise.” ComedySportz already is set up as an entertainment venue and theatrical schoolhouse, what with all the short-form comedy improv workshops it does. And parking is free. Find that in Chicago!

“Our goal is to provide a space where teachers will not only educate but create curriculums which may not be offered in other schools. We may offer space for anything from square dancing to film-making!” stated Kieweg, who also co-founded the ComedySportz Milwaukee Summer Camp for Kids and the ComedySportz Recreational League.

One class already scheduled is by Los Angeles-based screenwriter John Scott Lewinski on “The Secrets of Professional Screenwriters.” The class runs 6:30-9:30 p.m. April 20 and April 27. The cost is $115. And parking is free.
