Comedy is Relative

Families are rife with intimate sometimes incompatible relationships among individuals who didn’t choose to be together. And because we all have – or have been had by – families, we can relate to the endless possibilities of comedy that live in those social units.

So this month broadminded, the Milwaukee-based all-female sketch comedy group, is devoting four performances this month to its latest show, “Blood is Thicker than Liquor.” Broadminded says the show will feature sketches and videos dealing with assorted family conflicts and “promises to be the most stress-free, guilt-free and laughter-filled family gathering you have ever experienced.”

Anne Graff LaDisa says broadminded was well received in its performance at the Austin Sketch Fest Memorial Day weekend. She describes the experience as broadening.

“One thing that we talked about a lot while we were down there is the different ‘styles’ of sketch that are prevalent in different regions of the U.S. We saw groups from Austin, New York, Chicago and L.A. – each kind of had a different style to their show and material,” Anne says. “I don’t think it’s helping us to prepare for our new show in any way except for to just reinforce that sketch can look different and there isn’t one way it should look or only one way to develop a sketch.”

Broadminded – which includes Anne, Melissa Kingston, Stacy Babl and Megan McGee – will perform “Blood is Thicker than Liquor” at the Alchemist Theatre, 2569 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.

Show times: 8 p.m., June 16, 23, 24, and 25; 4 p.m. Sunday June 26.
