Sharing what we find

One of the home-grown comedy teams performing among the 25 groups and 15 stand-ups at the Milwaukee Comedy Festival is Homegrown Electric Circus. The ensemble of Scott Heaton, Josh Barto, Mike Walker, Jazmin Vollmar, and Evan Koepnick had been together only five months before appearing in the 2010 festival.

“We were still figuring out not only how to perform for an audience, but how we as a group functioned,” Scott recalls. The experience a year ago helped propel Homegrown’s development both as an improv team and as individual performers, Scott says, and now they’re proud to be returning. “I’ve always considered Homegrown as fans of comedy first, and comedians second. We started because we wanted to do what we loved watching so much. So to be a part of the festival and to be performing with all these great acts really feels like we got invited to sit at the cool kids’ lunch table.”

You can feast on Homegrown in the 10 p.m. slot on Day 1 of the Milwaukee Comedy Festival, which runs from Thursday, Aug. 4 through Sunday, Aug. 7 at ComedySportz, 420 S. 1st St.
