I know a groovy gathering three times a month on Humpday in an intimate downtown Milwaukee setting that serves adult refreshments as well as some of the best mix of standup talent around. And it’s free.
It’s called Open Mic Under the Stairs. (As I typed it, Autospeller told me it’s Open MICE Under the Stairs, which also could be amusing.) It’s in the lower level of the Karma Bar & Grill, 600 E. Ogden Ave., and it feels like a really nice rec room in somebody’s dad’s basement.
The show starts at 8 p.m. It’s another project of Milwaukee’s Caste of Killers Comedy Collective. It showcases established comedians sharpening their routines as well as novice comics and even the occasional one-and-done standups just testing their nerves.
From Facebook:
“For Comedians (new or old) Open Mic Under the Stairs is a great, supportive atmosphere where comics encourage other comics to grow. Take advantage of this. There’s never a need to take a comedy class; stick around after the open mic and buy your favorite comic a beer and they will spill the tricks of the trade. Network here. Get inspired to write your next huge bit here. This is the place where magic happens. Karma is also a really great place to grab some grub and have a drink as you wait to hit the stage. Everybody is welcome to perform. Get there by 7:30 to sign up!”
