Yeah, it’s a new year. Possibilities abound for those of us who survived the dreaded 2012 Apocalypse.
Some of your first chances to test your ability to laugh in 2013 come from some local standup shows.
At 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 3, Lara Beitz will be hosting the monthly showcase at The Sugar Maple. 441 E. Lincoln Ave. The evening costs all of $5 and features the live music of Jordin Baas. Performers include:

- Jay Abbondanza
- Stacy Pawlowski
- Christina Wright
- Matty Field
- Tony Tudor
- Ryan Holman
Then, at 8:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, Jason Hillman, of the Caste of Killers Comedy Collective, emcees the Milwaukee Stand-Up Comedy Showcase at the Karma Bar & Grill, 600 E. Ogden Ave. Scheduled appearances include:
- Mike Lebovitz
- Kristin Toomey
- Collin Bullock
- Steve Breese
- Tom Grimm
- Tim Higgins
That show costs $10 or $5 if you think ahead and order online.
Also Friday, at 9:30 p.m., Matty Field is hosting stand-up comedy at the Cactus Club, 2496 S. Wentworth Ave., featuring two bands – Heavy Hand and Scrimshaw. That show costs $7 and includes the comedy of:- Ricky Gonzalez

- Sammy Arechar
- Andy Bolton
- Tony Tudor
- Ryan Holman
