Unleashed comedy

My first play in high school included a dog in the cast, the pet of one of the other kids, a collie called Teddy. At odd moments during performances, Teddy would lick himself in inappropriate ways, always upstaging whatever else was going on.

Dogs can be funny. But it’s what they do to people and relationships that really is the stuff of comedy.

And so Next Act Theatre is presenting Sylvia, about what happens between a husband and wife when he brings home a dog.

From the web: “Greg’s wife Kate doesn’t take kindly to her man’s new best friend and rival for his affections. With their marriage in the balance, a series of hilarious and touching complications encourages Greg and Kate to compromise. If all goes well, Sylvia just might become a bone-a-fide member of the family, freshly healed by puppy love.”

Apparently, Next Act did this number 15 years ago (105 in dog years) but not in the same place. Because Next Act has a new address, 255 S. Water St. That’s why.

Sylvia (named for the dog) runs through Dec. 18 at Next Act. Tickets run from $25 to $35. For more information, please click here.
