Sports fans are used to seeing game officials on the sidelines or otherwise staying out of the way. At ComedySportz, the ref is also the ringmaster – controlling both the audience and the stagecraft, while still keeping a lower profile than the players.

Later this month, Turf Theater is offering a four-week workshop on ComedySportz refereeing, taught by 14-year veteran ref David Bogan.

From the Web: “You will learn a wide variety of skills and techniques that will not only improve your abilities as a referee, but you will also learn to recognize the discipline and timing that is necessary to maximize the quality of the improvisational scene. It’s a great way to improve your awareness and timing as a ComedySportz player, and refine your public speaking skills!”

Not just anybody can take the class. Students have to be a professional ComedySportz player or have at least two full seasons in the ComedySportz Recreational League. Graduates of the class can qualify to officiate in the ComedySportz High School League.

The classes are 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 27, Nov. 3 and Nov. 17 and Wednesday, Nov. 23. The fee is $60. For more information, contact Turf Theater.
