Stand up to Turf toe

In its mission to bring together instructors and students of the theater, our friends at Turf Theater have a couple of classes coming up.

On Thursday, Aug. 18, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., award-winning improv artist and international instructor Jill Bernard is teaching how to create compelling onstage characters.

From the web: “Jill Bernard offers a character toolkit to give participants the ability to create strong, compelling characters that they can hang on to through the whole scene. This session will focus on using Voice, Attitude or Posture and Animal, Prop or Obsession to build instant characters. Participants will use these tools to fearlessly initiate scenes, create relationships and find agreement. Please wear closed toe shoes to this workshop.”

(Hmmm. That must be in case those animals obsess on an attitude and you need something stronger than your voice to get their attention.) The class is $45, but only $35 if you sign up before Aug. 16.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, from noon to 3 p.m., Tom Clark – of stage, screen and TV credits – is holding an intensive standup comedy workshop.

From the web: “Please have concepts for your stand-up routine or a rough outline prepared before class. Tom will help you work through concepts, timing and prepare for the stage.”

That class costs $50 – or $40 if you register before Aug. 16.
