Stand up for comedy this week

The fine folks at Milwaukee Comedy are sorting through a record number of submissions from comedians across the U.S. of A and beyond who hope to perform in the 10th Milwaukee Comedy Festival (Aug. 6-9).

But while the festival organizers are watching videos, you and I can be experiencing the real stuff live and in person every night this week. Here’s just some of the Milwaukee comedy we know about (thanks in part to the Milwaukee Comedy calendar):

  • Monday, May 25 – ClamJam Open Mic, 7:30 p.m., Bremen Cafe, 901 E. Clarke St. FREE. Hosted by Liz Ziner and Allison Dunne.
  • Tuesday, May 26 – The Duck & Cover Comedy Hour, 8:30 p.m., Frank’s Power Plant, 2800 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. FREE. It’s another open mic, featuring veteran comedians, wannabes and newcomers, hosted by Chris Schmidt and Tom Grimm.
  • Wednesday, May 27 – One Mic Open Mic, 7:30 p.m., The Big Eazy, 2053 N. Martin Luther King Drive. FREE (and free popcorn). Performers start at 8:30.
  • Thursday, May 28 – On-Deck Open Mic, 7 p.m., Brewski’s Sports Club, 304 N. 76th St. FREE (with additional benefits for performers). This one’s presented by our friends at Caste of Killers Comedy Collective.
  • Friday, May 29 – Cheap Thrills Comedy Showcase, 8 p.m., Club Garibaldi’s, 2501 S. Superior St. $5 cover charge. Featuring Sammy Arechar, Lisan Wood, John Margelewski, Liz Ziner, Blake Burkhart, Bobby Condon, with Joe Riley as your emcee.
  • Saturday, May 30 – Fundraiser for “The Comedy of Hamlet … kinda sorta,” 8:30 p.m., ComedySportz, 420 S. 1st St. $10 with additional donations encouraged. Featuring standup comedy from Rich Laguna and Beth Lewinski, sketch comedy from broadminded Comedy, Sketch Marks and Variety Hour Happy Hour, improv comedy from Tall Boys, and including raffle, prizes and an improv jam.

All that live comedy so local. It takes your breath away, right? Kinda sorta?
